An all-Italian podium with razor-thin, if not non-existent, gaps. This is the story told by the provisional classification after the first leg of the Coppa delle Alpi St. Moritz Edition.
While awaiting the final official classification, Francesco and Giuseppe Di Pietra hold first place in their 1938 Fiat 508 C Balilla with 116 penalties. In second and third place, two crews are tied with 117 penalties: Gian Mario Fontanella and Anna Maria Covelli in a 1930 Fiat 514 S, and Celestino and Oreste Sangiovanni in a 1959 Porsche 356 A.
Rounding out the day’s top five are Alberto Aliverti and Sergio Carrara, who accumulated 120 penalties in their 1937 Fiat 508 C, and John Houtkamp with Chelly Houtkamp Van Bussel in a 1996 MG RV8 with 178 penalties.
Trofeo St. Moritz
Winning the coveted “Trofeo St. Moritz”, awarded based on the classification of the time trials held on the legendary Olympic Bobrun in Celerina, were Gian Mario Fontanella and Anna Maria Covelli with 21 penalty points.
Once again, two crews share the second step of the podium with 27 penalties: Celestino and Oreste Sangiovanni, and Ralf Ehlen with Heike Koppel.
