The 1000 Miglia passes through Umbria and pays tribute to St Francis

From the lights of the Capital to the unique scenery of Italy’s green heart. The fourth leg of the 1000 Miglia 2026 offered an extraordinary first half of the day: having left Rome, the convoy immersed itself in the verdant hills, winding bends and timeless villages of Umbria, accompanied by the constant warmth, smiles and greetings of the public lining the roadside, encouraged to join in by the more than pleasant weather.

After passing through Terni and Foligno, the most moving moment took place in Assisi, where the Passage Control on the forecourt of the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Porziuncola was a heartfelt tribute to St Francis, eight hundred years after his death. Having completed the Time Trial and the Passage Control in Gualdo Tadino, the classic cars reached Gubbio for the Time Control and lunch break in the splendid setting of Piazza Quaranta Martiri.

In the classification, the battle for the lead is fiercer than ever. The main contenders are the Argentinians Juan and Margarita Tonconogy and the duo from Brescia Andrea Vesco and Fabio Salvinelli. The upcoming trials will therefore be crucial for both crews.
