The Mille Miglia’s international popularity and the friendship that binds motor racing to “Stars and Stripes” enthusiasts has been demonstrated by the fact that the first step on the road to the 32nd re-enactment of the “most beautiful race in the world” has been taken in California.

The beautiful Pebble Beach location is home to the famous “Concours d’Elegance”, the legendary “Concours Italiano“, “The Quail” and Laguna Seca, where the “Monterey Historic Races” are staged.

During the “Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance” a pair of Red Arrow trophies were awarded to two unique cars.

A special category was established within the competition, reserved for cars having the same characteristics as the Italian race. In other words, “Sport” or “Grand Touring” cars that were manufactured between 1927 and 1957.

This year, two special awards were dedicated to the Italian race, one for pre-war cars and another for post-war vehicles.

Since 2006, in addition to the prize awarded to the owners of the winning cars, the winners’ names are engraved on another trophy with the Red Arrow that remains permanently at Pebble Beach.

The winners of the 2013 awards were of exceptional value: the prize in the prewar category went to a 2900 Alfa Romeo Type B “P3” that Carlo Pintacuda brought to victory in the Mille Miglia of 1935. This vehicle, now owned by collector Gregory Whitten, was a single-seater. However, Enzo Ferrari, who then managed the Alfa Romeo racers, turned it into a two-seater in order to make it eligible for Mille Miglia participation. The cabin was so narrow that Baron Della Stufa was chosen as co-pilot, due to his slight build.

The trophy for the post-war category was assigned to Jon Shirley’s Ferrari 212 Berlinetta Vignale. The car took part in the Mille Miglia of 1951 and 1952, driven respectively by Franco Cornacchia and Guido Mariani.

Marco Makaus, CEO of 1000 Miglia Srl (the company wholly owned by the Brescia Automobile Club that since 2013 organizes the historical reenactment of race) presented the awards on the famous walkway of Pebble Beach.

Makaus expressed 1000 Miglia Srl’s keen interest in dedicating more and more attention to the original vehicles that competed in Mille Miglia historical editions from 1927 to 1957. These outstanding cars will undergo certification, verifying that they have taken part in one of the historical MM editions.

As for the next edition, the other CEO of 1000 Miglia Srl, Andrea Dalledonne, announced that registrations on www.1000miglia.it will be opening in late September, at which time the 2014 edition will be presented.

There will be substantial changes to the race route and program, as well as a complete review of the coefficients of merit applied to the participating cars.
