The timeless charm of the “Most Beautiful Race in the World” has made its way across the Channel. Against the splendid backdrop of Grantley Hall, nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, the Yorkshire Elegance took place, one of Britain’s most prestigious motoring events, organised by Simon Smith of The Fast Lane Club. Amidst vintage rarities and a refined Concours d’Elegance, the “Spirit of 1000 Miglia” award was presented for the first time in the UK. This accolade was created to promote worldwide the values of daring, elegance and pioneering vision that have defined the essence of the Red Arrow since 1927.
The prize was won by the extraordinary 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 owned by Nicholas Smith and Lee-Ann Lodge. The car showcased all the charm of a vehicle that has truly lived on the road, in the most authentic way: it arrived at the event bearing its race stickers and the dust accumulated over the nearly 2,000 kilometres of the 1000 Miglia held last June.
Powered by its original 2.9-litre VB6J engine and featuring bodywork by Mulliners of Birmingham, the car boasts a fascinating history right from the start: delivered in May 1955 to R.H. Lindsay Watson – a Scottish Olympic athlete and rugby player – it has a deep connection with the Red Arrow.
The awarding of the “Spirit of 1000 Miglia” to the Yorkshire Elegance confirms the success of an accolade which, since its debut at Monterey Car Week in 2018, has continued to feature at the most prestigious international concours d’élégance events to honour the true jewels of automotive history.
