Matera
Matera is an enchanting place that captivates with its ancient history and unique landscape. Located in Basilicata, the city is famous for its Sassi, ancient dwellings carved into the limestone rock, perched on the slopes of a ravine. These settlements, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tell stories of daily life dating back thousands of years.
Strolling through the narrow streets of the historic centre, you can admire rock churches such as the Church of San Pietro Barisano, Santa Maria dell’Idris and San Pietro Caveoso, as well as charming courtyards, called vicinati. The sunlight reflecting on the stone walls creates a magical atmosphere, especially at sunset, when the city is tinged with golden hues. The highest part of the Civita is home to the Cathedral, dedicated to Maria Santissima della Bruna, a masterpiece of Romanesque-Apulian architecture. Built in the 13th century, the church offers a panoramic view of the Sassi and the gorge (gravina) below.
Matera is also a lively cultural centre, with artistic events and festivals that celebrate its rich tradition. The local cuisine is rich in typical dishes such as cavatelli pasta and Matera bread, offering culinary experiences not to be missed.
