Coppa delle Alpi 2024 - The Great Alpine Journey
The Coppa delle Alpi 2024 was a unique edition that, exceptionally abandoning its usual winter format, spanned the entire week from 28 April to 4 May. Starting from Trieste, the crews crossed the entire Alpine arc from East to West in five legs, crossing the borders of Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Germany and France, for a total of about 1600 kilometres that took them to Courmayeur. Cortina, Seefeld, Saint Moritz and Gstaad are the city legs.
After the success of the 2023 edition, 1000 Miglia decided to use the strength of its network to launch the ambitious project of the Great Alpine Journey, a path of reflection parallel to the race itinerary aimed at representing the socio-economic, anthropological and environmental transformations of the Alpine macro-region. Exponents of the different areas of interest and belonging to the nations crossed by the Coppa delle Alpi 2024 were part of the convoy that tackled the route. There were five themes: agriculture, craftsmanship, culture, energy and tourism, which were matched to the different leg and passage locations.
The number of competing cars was limited to 30, other 10 cars hosted as many opinion leaders who fuelled a debate on specific aspects of the chosen theme. The outline of the themes were based on a set of interviews carried out with a mix of local exponents operating in the sector, testimonials of good practices from other Alpine communities, experts in sector scenarios and representatives of institutions, who provided the “narrative” of the issues around which to develop the reflections of those taking part in the panels. The Great Alpine Journey ended in Courmayeur with a Forum, scheduled for Saturday, 4 May, a summa of the ideas and contributions gathered each day in the transition workshops and local meetings with the stakeholders.
In 2025 the Coppa delle Alpi will return to being a winter race, while the think tank launched in the Courmayeur forum will run parallel to the race.
