LEG 3 – THURSDAY 13RD JUNE
Lucca, Pontedera, Rosignano Marittimo, Bibbona, Castagneto Carducci, Castiglione della Pescaia, Marta, Ronciglione e Roma.
The third leg will see the descent towards the Capital City: the race will turn towards the hinterland, passing through Lucca and then through Pontedera, Rosignano Castiglioncello, Bibbona, Castagneto Carducci, until the lunch break in Castiglione della Pescaia. In the afternoon, the route enters Lazio, passing through Marta, Ronciglione and ending in Roma in Via Veneto.
Pontedera
1000 Miglia between technology and history
1000 Miglia will cross the city where a large part of the Genoese aeronautical construction industry was transferred in 1924. In the gateway to the Valdera, there is also the Institute of Biorobotics, a center of excellence in robotics and information technology located between the provinces of Lucca and Pisa, home to numerous historical sites.
Rosignano Marittimo
A very large and diverse territory
The municipality of Rosignano Marittimo boasts a very large and diverse territory. In addition to the main town, which looks like a classic Tuscan village, elevated above the coast and dominating the plain, there are six other hamlets, all interconnected. Along the coast from north to south are Castiglioncello, a well-known holiday resort, famous for its pine forest and the landscapes depicted by the Macchiaioli, Rosignano Solvay, the most populous hamlet, equipped with services, sports centres and schools, which owes its name to the industrial park created by Ernesto Solvay, and Vada, characterised by numerous campsites and a very active community. Heading inland, there are the three hillside hamlets of Castelnuovo Misericordia, Gabbro and Nibbiaia, characterised by the romantic views of the Tuscan hills, with their woods, trekking trails, cultivated fields and rustic farmhouses converted into comfortable rural guesthouses. Thus, from the sea to the countryside, passing through the city and its archaeological museums, the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo can make full use of its territory, offering tourists various types of experiences and possibilities. Reachable by the A12 motorway and the coastal railway that connects Genoa to Rome, as well as by sea, thanks to the Marina Cala de’ Medici port, Rosignano is located in a strategic point in Tuscany, a stone’s throw from its splendid cities known throughout the world.
Castiglione della Pescaia
An undiscovered jewel that offers an unbelievable combination of sea, nature and history
Situated on a promontory of the Maremma coast, between the blue of the sea and the green of the hills, lies Castiglione della Pescaia, an ancient fishing village that is now an internationally renowned tourist resort and that several times has received the Blu FEE Flag and the 5 Vele Legambiente award for the quality of its sea, the cleanliness of its beaches, its natural beauty and environmental care.
Castiglione della Pescaia is an undiscovered jewel that offers an unbelievable combination of sea, nature and history, making it an ideal destination for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in a unique and fascinating environment.
Marta
The Red Arrow in the upper Tuscia
Marta is a characteristic fishing village in Tuscia, in upper Lazio, overlooking the southern shores of Europe’s largest lake of volcanic origin, Lake Bolsena, some 20 km from the provincial capital Viterbo.
The town is situated on the slopes of Monte Marta where the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte rises, from which to gaze over the rooftops of the hamlet, plunging into the blue waters of the lake, protected by the embrace of the Volsini mountains. Nestled between the shores of the lake and cultivated fields, it offers the visitor an environment of great charm and poetry. The caravan of the 1000 Miglia 2022 passed through the medieval village on 17 June 2022, during the third leg. The numerous small squares join the narrow streets and stairways that lead from the Octagonal or Clock Tower to the shores of the lake, in the characteristic Borgo dei Pescatori.
Ronciglione
The Red Arrow in the town of Carnival
It is difficult to contain Ronciglione in a sentence that characterises it completely. Because Ronciglione – a picturesque village in southern Tuscia in the province of Viterbo, just a few kilometres from the shores of Lake Vico – is multifaceted. It is the town of Carnival, one of the ten most beautiful in Italy, but also the town of the Corse a Vuoto, the historic race of the horses without jockeys that run free along the Renaissance street in a real town hippodrome, and also the home of Marco Mengoni, whose attachment to his roots is well known. In fact, it is not so strange for the people of Ronciglione to wander around the old town centre or take a walk by Lake Vico and meet Marco, who for everyone remains the good guy with the extraordinary voice with whom they can have a chat. However, Ronciglione, among other things, is also the Borgo dei Borghi 2023, elected the most beautiful village in Italy by the RAI programme. This is thanks to its undeniable historical, artistic and scenic beauty, but also to the richness of its traditions and events. These include the 1000 Miglia. In fact, Ronciglione has been an affectionate stopover for the famous Red Arrow for almost thirty years, along the route that this year will lead to the capital. A now indestructible association, to which the traditional Passage Control in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and the passage of the cars in the splendid setting of the Lake Vico Nature Reserve provide the backdrop.
Roma
The Timeless Race in the Eternal City
There cannot be the most beautiful Race in the world without the most beautiful City in the world. In the almost one hundred years of history of the 1000 Miglia, this combination has only suffered one interruption in one edition of the speed race, that of 1940, for reasons of force majeure due to the war.
