LEG 5 – SATURDAY 21st JUNE

During the last leg, leaving from Parma, the cars will pass through Busseto, Cremona and Soncino.  Returning to Lombardy, the route will reach Orzinuovi and Pontoglio, in the lower Brescia area, before continuing on to Palazzolo sull’Oglio, lying on the banks of the river of the same name.  Adro, Travagliato and Gussago will welcome the drivers and co-drivers before the traditional final platform in Viale Venezia in Brescia.

Busseto

Busseto, the most authentic soul of Italy

Busseto is not just a place: it is an emotion that becomes a town, a journey through time amidst art, music and timeless flavours. Here, where Giuseppe Verdi was born, every stone tells a story and every street seems to sing an immortal aria.

In the heart of the Parma lowlands, surrounded by golden fields, rows of poplar trees and Verdi’s mists, Busseto welcomes travellers with its discreet elegance and evocative power. The ancient noble residences, a theatre-treasure chest, churches and porticoes speak of a profound civilisation that has managed to combine the rigour of the Po Valley with the grandeur of Italian culture.

Busseto is also a lively, creative place, crossed by new energies and a community spirit that looks to the future without forgetting its soul. Every event here becomes something more: a meeting between generations, a celebration of beauty, an invitation to slow down and really feel.

The passage of the Mille Miglia through Busseto is not just a leg of a car race: it is a symbolic moment, a meeting between history and modernity, between engines and melodies, between style and emotion.

In a world that is always on the run, Busseto remains a place where stopping becomes a privilege. Because here, in the heart of the plains, everything speaks of passion, memory and infinity.

Cremona

A city waiting to be discovered

Cremona, nestled on the left bank of the Po River, can be seen from afar with its bell towers and, in particular, its imposing Torrazzo, the tallest brick tower in Europe.

Visiting Cremona is extremely pleasant: stroll through the streets of the old centre to see the historic porticoes, the numerous characteristic squares, the shopping streets, the courtyards of splendid palazzos, the friezes and terracotta of imposing churches, a treasure trove of art.

Getting lost in the alleys, off the beaten track of tourist maps, means coming across old-fashioned shops with precious musical instruments hanging on strings, smelling the scent of freshly applied varnish and watching hands repeating ancient gestures of artistic craftsmanship of the highest level: the construction of stringed instruments.

Music and violin making are the strong identity of Cremona, making it unique in the world because only in this city can you enjoy an unforgettable musical experience, breathing in the scents of the wood of stringed instruments and listening to the notes of the most important works of great Italian composers. Claudio Monteverdi, the father of melodrama from which opera was born, was born in Cremona, and Giuseppe Verdi was born just a short distance from this city.

But Cremona is not only about stringed instruments and music, it is also about good food: a place that celebrates its cuisine thanks to its agricultural and food tradition and which, with its businesses, universities and research laboratories, produces excellent food, combining tradition and innovation and training people from all over the world. Every November, Cremona celebrates its nougat, which attracts over 200,000 tourists from all over Italy.

Cremona awaits your visit, to will surprise you!

Soncino

A medieval village nestled in the countryside, near the banks of the River Oglio

The village of Soncino is characterised by its important historical, architectural and environmental heritage. Its undisputed reputation has led it to be included for several years now in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy and in the select list of the most beautiful villages in the world.

It is a medieval village nestled in the countryside, near the banks of the River Oglio. The area was once covered by marshes and is still rich in springs. The village is surrounded by imposing walls, inside which there are churches, palaces, ancient mills, the recently restored Civic Tower and an enormous spinning mill… testifying to the importance of the place over the centuries. The showpiece of the village is undoubtedly the monumental complex of the Rocca Sforzesca, which is over 550 years old (1473-74).

Visitors to our village can spend a day immersed in history, admiring the architectural beauty (churches, cloisters, a rare heptagonal bell tower, the Silk Museum and the Printing Museum, as well as the Aquaria Archaeological Museum) and enjoying the numerous restaurants and bars. In addition, there is a wide range of events, themed festivals, food festivals and cultural initiatives involving the entire town. For these reasons, tourists from near and far will discover a medieval village with a contemporary feel. In short, an open-air museum waiting to be discovered.

Orzinuovi

Orzinuovi sank its roots in the late Middle Ages

Orzinuovi sank its roots in the late Middle Ages when, on 11 July 1193, at the express wish of the city of Brescia, the community of Orci Novi was settled in an area near the River Oglio, right opposite its ancient enemy Soncino, a stronghold of the Duchy of Milan. Always linked to the Serenissima, over time Orzinuovi took on the appearance of a fortified settlement: its town was equipped with a mighty wall to defend the western borders of the Venetian mainland.

Orzinuovi was the birthplace of some of Brescia’s most representative artists active between the 16th and 17th centuries, including Grazio Cossali and Pier Maria Bagnadore, as well as important religious figures, such as the Blessed Stefana Quinzani, and politicians who played a leading role in the historical events that have marked Italy’s history from unification to the present day.

Even today, despite the fact that the city walls were demolished during the 19th century, the two main gates of the town centre remain intact – Porta Sant’Andrea to the north and Porta San Giorgio to the south – as does the ancient fortress named after the original protector of the village, San Giorgio.

During the post-war period, Orzinuovi became an important manufacturing and commercial centre, constantly committed to preserving its historical and cultural heritage. This is symbolised by the charming Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the numerous churches scattered throughout the town centre, the remains of important noble residences and various civil, religious and military buildings in the hamlets of Barco, Coniolo, Ovanengo and Pudiano.

Pontoglio

Pontoglio, a town rich in history, tradition and hospitality

Pontoglio, a village in the province of Brescia with approximately 7,000 inhabitants, stands on the banks of the River Oglio, from which it takes its name, and which is also represented in the municipal coat of arms together with the charming Romanesque stone bridge, symbol of the town. Its origins date back to Roman and Lombard times, with a history marked by battles, land reclamation and transformations.

Today Pontoglio is a lively town that looks to the future without forgetting the value of its roots. There is a strong community spirit based on volunteering, participation and a desire to get things done: every year, events are organised that attract visitors and involve citizens of all ages, such as the patron saint’s day celebrations for Sant’Antonio Abate and the summer festivities.

The pride of the gastronomic tradition is Casoncello di Pontoglio De.Co., a handmade filled pasta that combines authentic flavours and conviviality: a true emblem of the territory, also recognised as a Traditional Italian Agri-Food Product.

Pontoglio has already enthusiastically hosted the 1000 Miglia, receiving great acclaim from the participants. Ready to experience this extraordinary event once again, the community is preparing to welcome the race with its warmth, history and passion.

Pontoglio awaits you with its flavours, culture and tradition!

Palazzolo sull’Oglio

A thousand years of history to discover

The City of Palazzolo sull’Oglio was established at the end of the 12th century, but archaeological finds show that it was already an important communication network point between Brescia, Bergamo and Milan in late Roman times.

Today Palazzolo sull’Oglio is a city of twenty thousand inhabitants, full of testimonies of its millenary history: a significant number of monuments of great historical and architectural value, as well as numerous cultural activities and endeavours that contribute to offering an attractive reality, all waiting to be discovered.

It is no coincidence that every year since 2010, between May and June, Le Meraviglie della Terra del Fiume (The Wonders of the River Land) comes to life: the experiential and cultural tourism event organised by the Department of Cultural Planning and Tourist Promotion.

A true tourist season, made possible thanks to the contribution of numerous city associations, which aims to make the area’s historical, artistic, environmental, cultural and productive heritage better known and more appreciated.

Among the many beauties of the city is certainly the Torre del Popolo, a true symbol of Palazzolo: at 92 metres high, it is Europe’s tallest civic bell tower with a circular base.

Also not to be missed are the Castle (Rocha Magna) and the Rocchetta (Rocha Parva), the Torrione di Mura and its medieval village, the Teatro Sociale, the Parco delle Tre Ville with its Art Nouveau residences, the Parco Fluviale on the banks of the Oglio and much more.

Adro

Located in the heart of Franciacorta, one of Italy’s most renowned wine-producing areas.

Adro is a municipality in the province of Brescia, located in the heart of Franciacorta, one of Italy’s most renowned wine-producing areas. The town is surrounded by hills and vineyards but offers much more than picturesque views and excellent wines.

The centre preserves an interesting historical and architectural heritage. In addition to the Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista, other notable buildings include the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Castello, located in a panoramic position and surrounded by the remains of ancient walls and a medieval tower, and the Church of Santa Maria in Favento, which is smaller but full of charm. Near the centre is the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve, a place of worship vry dear to the local population and the many pilgrims who visit every year.

The 17th-century Palazzo Bargnani-Dandolo, now the town hall, once a place of culture, art and Risorgimento thought, bears witness to the deep bond between Adro and history. Its rooms, with their 19th-century paintings, tell the story of a vibrant period in Italian history.

Not far from the centre is Torbiato, a hamlet of Adro, surrounded by vineyards and the tranquillity of the Franciacorta countryside. Here too, you can breathe in the authenticity of the area, among farms, wineries and well-preserved rural landscapes.

For nature lovers, Monte Alto offers hiking trails through woods and panoramic views of the plain and nearby Lake Iseo.

Travagliato

A community to discover

It is not easy to describe a community like Travagliato in just a few words. Ours is a dynamic community full of enthusiasm, but at the same time, it is deeply rooted in its traditions and proud of its unique characteristics. A good example of this is the special relationship with horses, which together with Travagliato form a combination that is well known and appreciated not only throughout Italy, but also beyond its borders. Just look at what “TravagliatoCavalli” has to offer every year, an event that has not only achieved absolute excellence but continues to grow and achieve increasingly prestigious goals. Another landmark in our town is the splendid Piazza Libertà, not only for its artistic and aesthetic reasons but because it represents the beating heart of our territory, the place where the people of Travagliato love to meet and share their days. Another jewel of absolute beauty is the Vantiniano cemetery, which our entire community looks upon with unwavering affection. We would also like to highlight the particular attention paid to agriculture on the one hand, and on the other, the ability to devote ourselves to new sectors that are increasingly highlighting Travagliato’s productive realities (from commerce to culture). All this and much more is Travagliato, and that is why we are proud of our community!
